The Impact of Curing Coma

This report looks at the impact of the campaign in the last several years, as of December 2025.

Research Impact

Scientific Momentum Advancing the Field

Since the launch of Curing Coma in 2019, the Curing Coma Campaign has advanced science in the topic of coma and disorders of consciousness through support of neurocritical care research.

From 2020 to 2024, citations of Curing Coma-related articles in Neurocritical Care increased by 6,650%.

The campaign has produced more than 40 peer-reviewed publications. Publications from the Curing Coma Campaign and its contributors have been cited more than 1,100 times, including over 330 citations in peer-reviewed journals in 2025.

These numbers demonstrate the growing academic and clinical interest in coma care and disorders of consciousness.

What We've Accomplished

Common Data Elements for Disorders of Consciousness

In 2020, the Neurocritical Care Society’s Curing Coma Campaign launched an international initiative to create common data elements (CDEs) for disorders of consciousness (DoC). This CDE initiative is motivated by the recognition that ongoing progress in our field depends on the development of harmonized and uniform data elements.

The Neurocritical Care journal collection has a total of 16,339 access and 117 citations across the articles, as of December 15, 2025.

COME-TOGETHER Study

Treatment practices and attitudes regarding prognosis of coma vary widely across the world. To better understand prevailing concepts and the full spectrum of this variability, the NCS Neurocritical Care Research Network (NCRN) conducted the COME-TOGETHER survey on coma epidemiology, evaluation and therapy.
